Medical Emergency? Call for help immediately.
Mr. Spike is a decision-support tool, not a medical device. If you or someone else is experiencing a severe hypoglycemic episode with loss of consciousness or inability to swallow safely, call emergency services (112 / 911) immediately and administer glucagon if available. Do not rely on this app in a medical emergency.
π Getting Started
What is Mr. Spike and who is it for?
βΌ
Mr. Spike is a daily companion app for people with Type 1 Diabetes. It helps you manage low blood glucose episodes (hypoglycemia) with calm, measured, step-by-step guidance β preventing the "panic-eat-spike" rollercoaster that so many T1Ds experience. It's designed for anyone on MDI (multiple daily injections) or insulin pump therapy who wants to reduce glucose variability and rebound highs.
Do I need to create an account to use Mr. Spike?
βΌ
No! Mr. Spike works in local mode without an account. Your data stays on your device. If you create an account, your data syncs securely to our servers, which enables the AI personalization to improve your recommendations over time β and lets you restore your data if you change devices.
How do I set up my Rescue Foods Library?
βΌ
The Rescue Foods Library is where you define your personal go-to treatments. Mr. Spike ships with starter templates (glucose tabs, juice, honey, etc.) that you can edit. To add your own foods:
- Go to Settings β Rescue Foods Library
- Tap "Add Food"
- Enter the name, carbs per portion, and portion size (e.g., "4 glucose tabs = 16g carbs")
- Check the nutrition label on your actual product for accuracy
What glucose thresholds does Mr. Spike use?
βΌ
By default, Mr. Spike uses:
- Low threshold: 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) β triggers a rescue plan recommendation
- Very low threshold: 54 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L) β triggers a higher-dose recommendation
π‘ Rescue Plan
Why does Mr. Spike suggest 15g of carbs β and why only one step?
βΌ
The stepwise approach is based on widely used clinical guidance for treating hypoglycemia. The "15-15 rule" β take 15g of fast-acting carbs, wait 15 minutes, recheck β is recommended by major diabetes organizations because it prevents overcorrection and rebound highs. The biggest cause of the glucose rollercoaster is eating too much too fast. Mr. Spike's timer creates the pause your brain needs before adding more. If you're still low after 15 minutes, the app guides you to a measured second step.
What are the three food options (Fast & Precise, Whole-food, Lifestyle-friendly)?
βΌ
All three options are effective for treating a low β the difference is the food type:
- Fast & Precise: Glucose tablets or glucose gel β the most predictable and fastest-acting. Best when you need the most control.
- Whole-food fast: 100% fruit juice, honey, raisins, dates β still fast-acting, less processed. Good everyday choice.
- Lifestyle-friendly: Minimum effective fast carbs with a structured stabilizer snack after. Better suited if you follow a lower-carb lifestyle β but note: fast carbs are still required for treating an active low.
Why is there a 15-minute timer? Can I skip it?
βΌ
The timer is the most important feature in Mr. Spike. When you're low, panic triggers the impulse to eat more and more. The 15-minute timer gives your body time to absorb the carbs before you assess whether you need more. You can tap "Recheck Now" at any time β but we encourage you to wait the full time when possible, because it's the key to preventing rebound highs. If you have severe symptoms, always prioritize your safety and eat more if needed.
How does Mr. Spike learn and improve my recommendations?
βΌ
After each rescue session, Mr. Spike asks for an outcome check-in (where did your glucose end up?). Over time, it builds a picture of your personal response curve β how your glucose reacts to specific foods, amounts, activity levels, and stress. The AI then subtly adjusts your recommendations within safe bounds. For example, if you frequently rebound high after 15g, the app may suggest a slightly smaller amount next time. Changes are gradual and always kept within safe limits.
π Account & Data
How is my health data protected?
βΌ

Can I use Mr. Spike on multiple devices?
βΌ
Yes, if you have a Mr. Spike account. Your data and personalization sync across all devices signed in with the same account. In local (no account) mode, data stays on a single device.
βοΈ Medical & Safety
Is Mr. Spike a medical device?
βΌ
No. Mr. Spike is a decision-support tool, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. The recommendations are based on widely published clinical guidelines for hypoglycemia management and are intended to support informed decision-making β not replace your healthcare provider's advice. Always consult your diabetes care team for personalized medical guidance.
What should I do if my glucose is very low (below 40 mg/dL) or I have severe symptoms?
βΌ
If you have severe hypoglycemia symptoms (confusion, loss of consciousness, inability to swallow), call emergency services (112 / 911) immediately. If available, administer glucagon. Do not rely on Mr. Spike in a medical emergency β call for help first.
For very low glucose (<54 mg/dL / 3.0 mmol/L), Mr. Spike will show an elevated recommendation and an emergency banner. Always follow the guidance of your healthcare provider in severe situations.

Why does Mr. Spike recommend confirming with a fingerstick?
βΌ
CGM readings (including FreeStyle Libre) can lag behind actual blood glucose, especially during rapid changes. When your glucose is dropping steeply or your symptoms don't match your CGM reading, a fingerstick blood glucose test provides the most accurate current value. Mr. Spike will prompt you to consider a fingerstick in these situations β always follow your CGM manufacturer's guidance.
βοΈ Technical
Does Mr. Spike connect to my CGM (FreeStyle Libre)?
βΌ
Currently, Mr. Spike works with manual glucose entry. CGM integration (starting with FreeStyle Libre) is on our roadmap and coming soon. When it's available, you'll be able to connect securely via an authorized integration flow.
What devices and iOS versions are supported?
βΌ
Mr. Spike requires iPhone running iOS 16.0 or later. We recommend keeping your iPhone updated for the best experience and latest security patches.
